City has four distinct seasons. The surrounding mountains are
natural climate modifiers, The low humidity also makes for a dry,
powdery snow that has been given the epithet "greatest snow on
earth."

The Salt Lake Valley was settled in 1847 by Mormon pioneers
(members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) after
an arduous trip by covered wagon through rough terrain. Brigham
Young, their leader, spotted the valley and spoke the now famous
words, "This is the place!" The area
was a desert and barren, plagued with crickets. Three years
later, they founded the University of Deseret which is now known
as the University of Utah and the Salt Lake City area blossomed
under Young's leadership.
